Membership regulations for the MLA are specified in general in the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act (CNCA) and in the Association's By-law. Up until recently, however, the MLA did not have a written policy relating to membership.

The Board of Directors completed a review of membership practices, and has developed a written policy to better inform Members regarding the rights and benefits of membership.  This policy complies with the MLA's new By-law, passed by a Special Resolution of the Members at the 2017 AGM on 18 May 2017.

As of March 2019, we have 487 registered members.  We are continuing to work hard to increase our numbers even further.  Your support to the Association by becoming a member would be greatly appreciated.  If you are already a member,  thank you very much indeed.  The MLA exists to represent your interests in keeping the lake a safe and enjoyable place to work, play, and live.

You benefit directly as a member:

  • voting privileges at the AGM or any Special Meeting of the MLA;
  • the MLA is working towards obtaining discounts for members at local businesses;
  • the new website will soon have a Member's Portal for additional features available to members only.

You benefit from the activities that the MLA can undertake with your financial support:

  • you get a Voice at municipal meetings and with government agencies, as the MLA represents a great number of like-minded citizens;
  • you get a great hazard buoy program that helps keep our boaters safe on the lake; and
  • you get access to our Newsletter (we need your email address for this) to keep you informed of lake news and activities.

Who can be a member?

Any individual who is interested in the objectives of the MLA and wishes to support our various activities is most welcome to join the Association as a member.  There is no limit to the number of individuals who live at the same address - each person 18 years of age or older can join the MLA.

How long is a membership term?

You can apply to become a member at any time during the year, and your membership will be good for one full year.  For example, if your membership starts on 17 July in a given year, it will be good until 16 July the following year.  Your membership term will start the day MLA receives your name and fee payment.    

What is the membership fee?

The fee is determined by a vote of the members at the Annual General Meeting in late May every year.  The new fee then comes into effect on 1 June, and remains in effect until 31 May of the following year.  The current fee, in effect until 31 May 2018, is $10 per membership.

The membership fee has been set at $10 ever since 2013.  This fee is the same whether you register directly with the MLA, or via your Road Association.  The MLA Executive has strived to maintain as low a membership cost as practicable.  However, depending upon the expected revenue from membership, and the intended activities for an upcoming year, it might be necessary from time to time to recommend to the members a different fee.

Membership renewal

To avoid lapses in your membership, please note the expiry date of your membership and forward the necessary fee for renewal ahead of time.  We don't want to lose you as a member!  The MLA will post notices on the website and by e-mail at regular times during the year to remind members to renew their memberships.

You have two options to register:

Directly to the MLA

Please print and use this Membership Form to submit your application directly to the MLA by mail, or by hand to any of the Directors.  We will provide a receipt for any cash payments.  We need your name and address as a minimum, to register you as a member.  Although your email address is not required for membership, we would greatly appreciate also receiving this information to assist us in keeping you apprised of Association activities. 

via your Road Association

If your Road Association has decided to submit annual dues to the MLA on your behalf, you will be registered as a member provided that the MLA knows who you are!  Please ensure that your Road Association Representative submits your name and address along with the fee payment.  Although your email address is not required for membership, we would greatly appreciate also receiving this information to assist us in keeping you apprised of Association activities.

If you are the Representative of your Road Association, the MLA thanks you immensely for the work you are doing on our behalf.   We encourage Road Associations to continue supporting the MLA to give all our residents a stronger voice in the community.

When submitting your Road Association's membership application, please include a list of names and addresses along with the appropriate funds.  Without a name and address, MLA is unable to comply with the Not-for-profit Corporations Act and therefore cannot issue a membership.  Therefore, funds that are received, but cannot be correlated to a name and address, will be treated as a donation to the MLA.

As an MLA Member, you should be receiving important notices regarding membership benefits and activities.  These include AGM notification (date, location, agenda), proposed Resolutions for adoption at Members' meetings, Financial Statements, and the proposed Budget for the next fiscal year.  By far the most effective method of sending this information to you is by email.
